This might be a stupid question, but what does “Ranger O.D., Old Man Emu susp.” mean? Did he overdose on Rangers, leading him to build this Toyota? Did he get an elderly gentleman’s emu to build the suspension for him? What does this mean?

Hard to say on the FJ60, really depends on the quality of work done with the swap and how long ago the swap was done. Might make emissions testing difficult if that’s a consideration for your area.

Personally, I’d pass on someone else’s swap/project. 350 swaps were super big a while ago, there are far better engine swap options available now.

He’s got it listed online. I feel like I can get or build a lot of truck for $7,500 such as an equivalent Suburban, K10, Blazer, Bronco, ect. However, I really like old Cruisers and old small block Chevy’s for their simplicity, reliability, ridiculously cheap parts and their ubiquitousness. You could probably find parts for a SBC out on the trail somewhere under a rock or behind a bush. They’re everywhere. This is an awesome combination.

I’d consider EFI and updating to a roller set up on the 350, but the bones are there so that’s what’s important.

I wouldn’t personally pay $7,500, but if you could pick this truck up for $6,500 or a little, it’d be a really fun base for a #overlanddoitforthegramfam build. You’d have a really cool, unique rig on a budget.

Here’s the Hemmings listing.

Yeah, it would be charitable to call them even “lethargic”. People get all huffy on the motor swap thing, but oh, did the early 4 door trucks need more power. (My FJ40s got the original F in it and it’s OK, for puttering around since it’s geared so short.) But, NO WAY, is a stock 60/62 even remotely adequate for highway usage today.

I’ve got a 60 behind the shop that the PO threw a rod (how? have no idea) on and I’m trying to find a cost effective swap while keeping the manual and transfer case on it . I have a good 3FE sitting there, which will mate right up, but for the hassle? 150HP feels not quite enough.

Without saying “too much” about my current “Ultimate Mancave Obsession”, I’ll observe that Southern/SE Arizona are getting a LOT more rain these days. I thought it was nutty, but a rainwater-capture system is probably a far-more-reliable way to get far-cleaner potable and domestic water. Out there between Tucson and Sierra Vista (gorgeous!) a lot of people are using rainwater as primary supply— some places the ground water is just too deep or too laden with sulfites to be usable.

I’m shocked out how much rain they’ll get, seasonally, out there

Sand Filter and a R/O stage and next thing you know Robert’s Your Mom’s Brother.

it blows my mind they actually put that engine in the 80 behind the A442. I can’t even imagine. I mean, given that the wheel hp on the 1fz is only in the 130-140 hp range, what does that mean for an FJ80...90 wheel hp? yeesh.

The first LC , which got me hooked, was an early ‘91 with the 3FE. I put 100K miles on that truck and, somehow, loved it. Trouble free... but lousy gas mileage... and...

I always joked (and this is still true today) that I’d never owned a vehicle where I spent most of the time with my right foot firmly planted on the floor (trying to get it to move out of its own way...) or firmly planted on the brake pedal trying to get it to stop. Those brakes were horrific-bad.

EVERYTHING on that 3FE was overbuilt though — timing GEARS to run the cam, double belts to run the essentials, and a shockingly-low 8:1 compression ratio with over-sized bearings everywhere. So, yeah, keep oil in the damn thing and it will run forever at 12 MPG.

I stayed in a cabin north of Flagstaff last weekend that used rainwater capture for its water. Southern Arizona has had a few wet years, but a wet year now is still less than 14" of rain. We’ve always had seasonal monsoons and wettish winters, but our climate has been drying over the last thirty years. We’ve technically been in a drought over the last twenty-six years. They’re considering not calling it a drought anymore and just classifying it as the new norm.

One of the reasons they’re collecting rainwater is that you don’t need a permit for it (in some western states you don’t own rainwater that falls on your property), and most of the aquifers in Southern Arizona have been depleted.

Also, you don’t necessarily have the right to pump groundwater on your property in Arizona (and most western states) . There’s a whole mess of common law, statutes and court cases (going back 160 years) which creates a fairly complicated set of regulations. However, rainwater (for now) isn’t regulated. The feds are probably going to declare a drought on the Colorado/Lake Mead this year, so that could change in the future. However, if you can buy a piece of land with prior appropriation to water, you’re set.

The sites we looked at around Green Valley had a lot of rainwater systems— the alternative is “water haul” which seems wasteful, but that’s what they are down to I guess.

We ended up farther east, Sierra Vista-ish, and are still amazed at how green it can be.  The higher elevation helps... and it’s cooler in the summers.

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > SBA Thanks You For All The Fish

When people think “desert” they usually picture a brown, dusty place. The Sonoran Desert is a jewel. Lots of color. Saguaros, yuccas, creosote and palo verdes don’t need much water to stay green. Looks like Green Valley is a bit wetter than Tucson. They average about 14" a year.

It looks like Green Valley and Sahuarita were actually depleting their groundwater. They lie within a special management area, which means you need permits to pump. That explains all the rainwater capture. Here’s a report from 2017. They commissioned the report in order to ask for CAP water to replenish their water table. It looks like it was granted.

https://www.usbr.gov/lc/phoenix/programs/GREENVALLEY/GVWSSPrelimAsmnt.pdf

Too much rainwater capture in that area could actually be a bad thing, as it could further reduce the amount of groundwater.

There’s also pollution from the Copper Mines’ tailings and processing. They don’t necessarily WANT the ground water, even if they could pump it...

They’ll be down to Water Haul if a ban on rainwater capture goes in.
